This chapter looks closely at eleven of the thirteen kamui yukar of the Ainu shin'yōshū and at the animal spirits whose story is told in them. As a matter of convenience, the kamui yukar are referred to by the English word “chant” and numbered in the order in which they appear in the volume edited and translated by Chiri Yukie. This reading of the Ainu shin'yōshū focuses in particular on its animal spiritual beings: the portrayal of both their physical and spiritual dimensions, their role in the narratives, and how each animal spirit is related to the rest of the natural/spiritual realm and to the human community.

Keywords:   kamui yukar, animal spirits, chants, Ainu shin'yōshū
