This chapter discusses the first Pameran Karya Arsitektur Indonesia (Indonesian Architectural Exhibition) held in Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta. During the event, there were extraordinary attempts, though totally unsuccessful, to incorporate elements of vernacular building into contemporary architecture, during which art critic Jim Supangkat remarked that “tradition” had invaded “modern” Indonesia. By the mid-1980s such architectural experiments with the vernacular were exerting considerable influence as interest in traditionalism became top-down in nature when the government promoted traditional forms of architecture and deregulated its economy toward the mid-1980s to bring the notion of globalization to the heart of public discourse.
